Soil-Structure contact surface and rigid body definition

Post by hsafti » Tue Nov 02, 2010 1:46 am

Dear all,

I am considering using OpenSees software in plane strain SSI analysis
under cyclic loading. I have understood, roughly, how the structure of
the input file and the Tcl scripting language work. Nevertheless, I
would like to know; I understand that to model a rigid body, in
OpenSees, you can tie the horizontal and vertical displacements of the
nodes of the rigid entity. Is there any other way? Or did I
misunderstood?

Furthermore, how is definition of an interface in between soil and
structure carried out? I know that zero-length element definition exist;
however, I need an example for implementation :(

I am working on linking Gmsh with Opensees for pre/post processing! I
would like to share the link when its done, but if anyone had already
made one, please share!

Regards,
Hisham El Safti

why don't you look at the examples under the geotech section here

the laterally loaded pile example in particular.

Hi hsafti,

It is nice to know that you are working on linking Gmsh with OpenSees. Wish you all the best for the project. It is really needed for using OpenSees in real life analysis, particularly for Geotech community.

Could you tell us more about your idea. I don't get whats the point, because the topic here is about the structure contact surface and rigid body definition, how comes the rc helicopter is here?
@hsafti - I like your topic even it was from 2010, by the way do you have the link now?

I've found this difficult to work out in OpenSees.
