separation (uplifting) mode

Hi every body

I am studying nonlinear dynamic analysis of RC frame including soil-structure interaction(2D).
I would consider separation (uplifting) mode between soil and foundation.
How can i model this mode? which element is proper?

zroLength element with a gap material should be fine .. watch out for pounding if uplift does occur as your accelerations may go through the roof and you will need to damp them out quickly.
