How about creating an element wrapper, that could allow people to write their elements in 3D but also use them in a 2D grid??
Also, how about a material wrapper so that you write your NDmaterial in 3D directly without having to care about a 2DOF domain?

There are no such element wrappers; however, there is a plane stress material wrapper for 3D models. No plane strain wrapper, but it would be very easy to implement if needed.
