Rigid Diaphragm in a 3D model

When rigid diaphragm is assigned (by rigidDiaphragm command) at every floor level of a three dimensional building model using lumped plasticity formulation, the first mode shape appears to be in vertical direction. The assignment of rigid diaphragm also increases first natural time period of the building significantly. What are the causes of this kind of result?
