Leaning Column

Post by soo » Sun Jan 24, 2021 2:27 am

Hi
I am going to run a time history analysis for a 2D model with leaning column. should I assign the floor mass to the leaning column joints or all the mass needs to be assigned to the frame nodes?

If you have rigid floor diaphragms, you can distribute the mass across the floor. But you will need to put all the vertical load from the floor onto the leaning column.

Hi...
I am going to run nonlinear time history analysis on a few of my models. I am not sure which kind of structures need leaning column. As far as I understand leaning columns are needed when there are gravity column in a structure and in a 2D model we have to consider their effect.
So I think we don't need to model leaning columns in concrete/steel moment resist frames as each frame has its own stiffness against seismic mass. Therefore leaning columns are just needed to be model in steel brace frames. Is that ok?
