You are defining only truss elements in a 2D model with 3 DOF/node, so there is no rotational stiffness and the solver fails.

The authors probably did something with the GimmeMCK integrator to extract the damping matrix

Yes, the distributed loads enter the section state determination, in turn affecting the stiffness.

When you fix all DOFs, there are no equations to solve. Most of the solvers will give an error. Try switching to UmfPack.

This error can be due to so many things. Make a minimal example that replicates the issue.

You say your model is "fairly complex". Try a smaller, simpler model to ensure the results make sense.
