Damping in EBFs analysis

Post by susan » Tue Feb 27, 2018 9:36 pm

Hi all,

Rides and Popov (1994) mentioned that using Rayleigh damping is inappropriate for EBFs where the links go inelastic.

"To avoid developing misleadingly larger axial forces in braces and columns that are adjacent to links that yield in shear, it is recommended that a form of nonproportional viscous damping be used, in which no viscous damping is assigned to the links."

https://ascelibrary.org/doi/abs/10.1061 ... src=recsys

They recommended, "strain hardening with nonproportional viscous damping" instead of Rayleigh damping.

For dynamic analysis of EBFs, how can we apply "strain hardening with nonproportional viscous damping" in OpenSees?

Thank you in advance.
