Re: Weird answers from time history analysis!!

Hi Jeena, Thanks for your comments. 1) I'm using MKS and the records have been already multiplied by 9.81. Besides, I even made the earthquake records 2000 times bigger using scale factors, but still get the same answer. 2) Nope! If you check the drift recorder in the command manual, it's written th...

Weird answers from time history analysis!!

Hi there, I have already performed a lot of nonlinear dynamic analysis (time history, progressive collapse, etc.) in OpenSees and have never had any problems! However, this time it seems something silly is going on but I cannot figure out what is it ...?! I have a 3D 6-stoty RC structure - which I h...

Reading earthquake records from a file

I have several earthquake records in text file format, which are written in 4 columns. The first column is time and the others are x-, y-, and z-components, respectively. Just wanted to know if there is a kind of Path TimeSeries in OpenSees that reads such a file, or if I have to write a script that...

basicDeformation in nonlinearBeamColumn elements

Hi, can we use 'basicDeformation' for recording element's rotations in a 'nonlinearBeamColumn' element?! If the answer is NO, how could we record plastic rotations in such elements?! Is the only way for doing so, recording the curvatures (using 'deformation' in each intPoint) and then calculate the ...

Re: OpenSeesSP on Windows 8

Luisa, Unfortunately, it sometimes happens (I don't know why, but it does!). Anyway, if this is the case, and if neither 32-bit nor 64-bit versions work on your system, I encourage you to do as follows: Firstly, run 'mpiexec -n 4 OpenSeesSP'. when you do so, it'll go to the next command line. Now tr...

Re: analyze speed

For parallel processing you can use either OpenSeesSP or OpenSeesMP. Visit the following page for more information: http://opensees.berkeley.edu/OpenSees/p ... rallel.php

Re: Vertical Period Monitoring in 3D Frames

Thanks for your reply Dr McKenna. I know how to issue eigen command at each time step and record the eigenvalues/eigenvectors, but I don't know how to figure out which eigenvalue represents the frequency of the desired mode shape (translational in z direction).Definitely it should be done by the use...

Re: internal hinge (moment free)

You should use EqualDOF command so as to define simple connection between elements. Have a glance to the following topics: http://opensees.berkeley.edu/community/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=60432 http://opensees.berkeley.edu/community/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=60032 There are also several examples in OpenSeesWiki...

Vertical Period Monitoring in 3D Frames

Hi, I want to monitor the vertical period (translational in "z" direction) of a 3D 12-story structure during dynamic analysis and then plot the vertical period vs. time graph. I know how to write a script so as to record the list of eigenvalues during analysis for each time step. However, the proble...

MODAL Mass and Stiffness Matrices

Hi, is there any way to obtain MODAL mass or stiffness matrix of a 3D structure modeled in OpenSees? As far as I know the printA command only returns the general/global matrices, but I don't know how to find modal mass and stiffness matrices.

Re: transient analyze

Not sure what you exactly mean by this, but this is the user who usually determines the duration of the analysis. You can start transient analysis at t=0 and it would continue until t= ($numIncr)*($lambda), where lambda is the load factor increment, and $numIncr is the number of analysis steps to pe...

A Problem in Running OpenSeesSP

Hello Dr. McKenna, I've recently setup the OpenSeesSP (in addition to MPICH2) on my personal laptop. It seems that I've installed them correctly since when I double click on OpenSeesSP.exe (or even when I call it from the command prompt window), I can input my scripts or source a typical *.tcl file....

Re: System Solver Problem!

Maybe the forceBeamColumn element is involved herein! I think I should be checking out the other elements so as to better understand what's happening. By the way thanks a lot for your permanent support sir.
